Internet Legislation

I read an article on Mashable this evening about California Rep. Darrell Issa’s alternative legislation for the Internet instead of SOPA, which failed miserably as it should have. While I agree there needs to be some sort of legislation regarding the Internet, it’s difficult to determine the contents of such vital regulation. Many of Issa’s recommendations are still rather invasive such as wiretapping.
I don’t believe it can be left up to a few ideas or proposals from one or two people in the federal government. A committee of Internet savvy individuals that can objectively moderate the Internet should be formed similar to that of television and broadcast.
But even then I would still have some doubts. Journalism and especially journalism on the web is still in its infancy. One would hope that legislators have enough sense to continue freedom of the press for the Internet, the same rights enjoyed by print publications. Future legislation may determine the rise or demise of journalism for the web.
