Twitter and social media

Social Media is quickly becoming incredibly popular in today’s world. It is becoming even more popular in the communication field. One of the most popular social media websites is Twitter. Twitter is sort of like text messaging or in Facebook terms, it’s like posting constant status updates. Twitter was developed by a group of people in San Francisco and the way it was developed is actually quite interesting, http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/business/companies/twitter/index.html.
I am new to twitter and I am not very familiar with the website yet. But I have discovered that just about everyone working in the field of communications has a twitter account. Many organizations even have a company twitter account. For example, I currently follow political writer Matt Taibbi. Taibbi is one of my favorite writers for Rolling Stone and through his twitter account I am notified on my account when he posts new blogs, http://twitter.com/#!/mtaibbi. I also follow the Associated Press, The Onion, ESPN, and many others.
But Twitter serves as more than just a website to follow popular interests. Twitter serves as a way to network with other individuals in a number of different industries. I am currently following people that I met at the BMA event in Milwaukee, http://twitter.com/#!/BMA_Milwaukee.  This has given me an opportunity to meet with other people who I may work with in the future. Through this I have been able to build rapport with possible future employers as well.  Basically, Twitter and other forms of social media are going to play a huge role in the future and it is essential to become familiar with social media now rather than later; especially for people planning a career in communications.

  1. I like the fact you included that you were new to the "Twitter" world and your employers are currently using twitter. It shows that more and more companies have switched to social media and the trend is quickly taking over the nation. I agree that Twitter and other social media sites play a huge role in the future and its important when planning a career.

  2. Nick it's great that you finally have joined the Twitter movement! It is an effective marketing tool both for companies and for yourself. The opportunities that Twitter presents you with for networking are out of this world. It also offers you to make connections with political officials as you have already.
